What is a Flight Dispatcher?

​

A flight dispatcher is a certified person authorizing airline flights over assigned routes. You will be spending a good amount of time during a shift developing flight plans and communicating back and forth between pilots on the flights you are monitoring. In simpler words, you will be working at the operations center of the airline.

Dispatch is the heart of an airline. You will be sitting at the epicenter of the System Operations Control Center (SOCC) where effective decision-making, flight planning and good-communication skills are a must-have. You will have the authorization to develop flight plans, making critical decisions to ensure that flights operate safely and on time.

Universal Job Skills

As per the Canadian Aviation Regulations, all airlines and many commercial air operators in Canada require flight dispatchers. That being said, however, a certified dispatcher is never limited to a country or a group of airlines. Once you are equipped with the required knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to succeed in this challenging and rewarding career, you will be able to pursue career opportunities in many global airlines around the world. This course is tailor-made to assist you in preparing for flight dispatcher exams.

Licensing Procedure in Canada

​

To become a certified dispatcher, you must successfully pass two exams: Transport Canada Flight Dispatcher Generic Written Examinations FDOPS (80 questions, air law, procedures, operations, navigation general and flight planning) and FDMET (100 questions, meteorology) with a minimum score of at least 70%. The exams are multiple choice. The FD Generic examinations can be written at any Transport Canada testing center for which an advance appointment must be made. We will help you getting the appointment on the requested date. You also must speak either English or French fluently. At the time of your application, you must be at least 21 years of age.

Once you pass the exams, the job-hunting process starts. We will not only help you successfully pass the Transport Canada Examinations, but also prepare you for the aftermath.

Our instructors are very well known in the industry in Canada. So we will provide you with a great networking opportunity. During the 6-day course, you will have the opportunity to meet many certified active flight dispatchers as well as airline captains and first officers.

We also provide introduction for industry-standard software and tools, giving you practical experience in a simulated environment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Flight Dispatcher? Is it the same as an Air Traffic Controller?

Certified Flight Dispatchers are different than Air Traffic Controllers. Air traffic controllers begin their careers at NAV CANADA, a private, not-for-profit corporation. Flight Dispatchers, on the other hand, work for Airlines.

In Canada, Commercial airlines and many other commercial air operators are required to hire certified flight dispatchers. There is a special training to obtain a dispatcher certification. This is where we come in!

Will I be fully ready after this course?

As per CARs, in Canada, the Dispatcher Certificate consists of 2 parts:

  1. Generic Training (Transport Canada Flight Dispatch Written exam FDDOPS and FDMET) Note: the exams are free to write!

  2. On-the-Job training at the airline that hires you

This course mainly prepares you for the generic part (FDDOPS and FDMET). Once you successfully pass the Transport Canada Examinations, you will be ready to apply to Airlines! When you are hired, the second part of your training - On the Job – will commence. Our instructors are well known in the aviation industry in Canada. So we will provide you with a great networking opportunity. During the course, you will have the opportunity to meet many certified active flight dispatchers as well as airline captains and first officers. This is a great networking opportunity that you will not be able to find anywhere else.
 

Can I find a job right away?

Airlines will always need aircraft dispatchers because they are required by federal regulations. Dispatch departments are generally located at the epicenter of the Airline’s System Operations Control Center (SOCC). So, no airline may release an aircraft for a flight without the official dispatch release. Airlines will need you!


Will you help me get a job?

  1. First of all, we will assist you successfully pass the Transport Canada Examinations

  2. Once you pass, you will be qualified to apply to an airline. While job hunting is primarily done by you, we will provide you with the followings:
